A shocking, violent video from Phase 1 polling in West Bengal has completely hijacked the national election narrative. On Thursday, April 23, 2026, dramatic footage surfaced showing BJP candidate Subhendu Sarkar running for his life across open fields before being caught, chased, and physically assaulted by alleged Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in Dakshin Dinajpur.
The sensational footage has triggered a massive political firestorm just hours before the Phase 1 voting deadline concludes with a staggering 90% turnout.
Earlier today, Sarkar was conducting rounds in his Assembly constituency of Kumarganj when the situation spiraled out of control. The highly disturbing video, now viral across social media and national news networks, shows Sarkar and his lone security officer sprinting across open farmland, frantically trying to outrun a large, aggressive mob.
The raw footage captures a man catching up to the candidate, violently grabbing him, and attempting to throw punches. Sarkar's personal security guard and local BJP workers eventually manage to intervene, physically shielding the candidate and forcing the attackers to fall back.
Sarkar sustained minor injuries during the intense scuffle, and his official vehicle was reportedly vandalized by the mob. Following massive outrage and rapid circulation of the video, local police intervened and have already arrested five individuals in connection with the assault.
According to Sarkar, the chaos began early in the morning when he received urgent reports that his BJP polling agents were being forcibly removed from 8 to 10 polling stations across the district. He stated he personally went to the locations to successfully get his agents reinstated.
However, when he arrived at Booth No. 24 to assess the ground situation, a hostile mob was allegedly waiting for him.
Sarkar fiercely criticized the Election Commission's security arrangements. He stated that while Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were present inside the polling station premises, they did not step outside to assist him when the mob launched its attack, leaving him totally exposed with just his personal bodyguard.
Speaking to the media shortly after the attack, a visibly shaken but defiant Sarkar did not mince his words. "Mamata Banerjee has lost the election," he declared. "Out of sheer desperation and fear, they launched an attack on us. They were clearly intent on creating an atmosphere of intimidation."
While the arrests have been made, the "Missed Angle" here is how severely this 30-second video damages the Election Commission's strict guarantee of a "fear-free" election in West Bengal.
Despite deploying an unprecedented 2,450 companies of central forces to secure Phase 1 polling, the defining image of the day is a major political candidate literally running for his life through a dirt field while federal forces allegedly remained stationed inside the booth boundary.
The BJP IT cell and national leadership are already utilizing the footage to amplify their core narrative: that law and order has completely collapsed in West Bengal. By capturing the stark optics of helplessness on camera, the BJP has successfully turned what the TMC hoped would be a localized, rural scuffle into a potent national symbol of democratic breakdown.
