A brutal early-morning assault in Mira Road has escalated into a full-scale anti-terror investigation as authorities uncover ISIS-linked notes and a chilling case of digital self-radicalization.

What initially appeared to be a local violent altercation in Maharashtra has rapidly escalated into a full-scale anti-terror investigation.
As of Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) have taken over the probe into a shocking incident in Thane district, where a 31-year-old man stabbed two security guards after they allegedly failed to recite an Islamic verse.
The attack occurred around 4:00 AM on Monday, April 27, at an under-construction site at the Asmita Grand Mansion complex, located behind Wockhardt Hospital in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road.
Two security guards—Rajkumar Mishra (supervisor) and Subroto Ramesh Sen—were severely injured in the unprovoked knife attack. Mishra currently remains in critical condition in the hospital, while Sen is reported to be stable.
Utilizing local CCTV footage, the Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police moved rapidly, tracking down and arresting the accused, Zaib Zubair Ansari, within 90 minutes of the stabbing. He has since been produced in court and remanded to ATS custody until May 4.
The incident was immediately flagged as a suspected terror incident due to the chilling, religiously motivated timeline of the attack.
According to the victims and police officials, Ansari initially approached the guards asking for directions to a nearby mosque. He later returned, explicitly asked them if they were Hindus, and demanded that they recite the 'Kalma' (an Islamic declaration of faith). When the guards were unable to do so, he pulled a knife from his pocket and viciously attacked them.
The terror link was solidified during a subsequent search of Ansari's nearby residence at the Smita Regency building. The ATS recovered highly incriminating materials, including a laptop, three copies of the Quran, and handwritten notes explicitly referencing "lone wolf" attacks and a desire to join the Islamic State (ISIS).
While the violence itself is disturbing, the "Missed Angle" here is the deeply concerning profile of the attacker.
Zaib Zubair Ansari does not fit the typical profile of a locally recruited foot soldier. He is a highly educated chemistry graduate who lived in the United States with his family for nearly two decades (2000–2020) before returning to India. Operating as an online chemistry tutor, he reportedly lived completely alone in Mira Road after his Afghan-origin wife left for the US.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has publicly labeled this a textbook case of "self-radicalization." This highlights a terrifying new frontier for domestic intelligence agencies: how extreme isolation, combined with unchecked digital indoctrination, is creating undetectable "lone wolf" threats right in the middle of Mumbai's bustling, diverse suburbs.
