In a masterclass of electoral dominance, the ruling party has completely dismantled the Congress and AAP in its home state, securing a historic landslide victory across Gujarat's massive multi-tier local body elections.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has just delivered an absolute masterclass in electoral dominance in its home fortress. As of Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the counting of votes for Gujarat's massive multi-tier local body elections has confirmed a historic, landslide victory for the saffron party, effectively wiping out the opposition across the state's urban centers.
The BJP has officially won all 15 Municipal Corporations that went to the polls, securing more than a 50% vote share across the board. The party has established an unassailable lead, winning over 6,472 of the roughly 9,900 total seats across all tiers of local governance.
The saffron wave was surgical in urban areas. In the Rajkot Municipal Corporation, the BJP won a staggering 65 out of 72 seats. In Jamnagar and Morbi, they completely routed the opposition, utilizing their "panel system" (fielding four candidates per ward) to secure consecutive ward sweeps.
However, the most shocking result came from the Surat Municipal Corporation. The BJP won an overwhelming 115 out of 120 seats. Because the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) combined failed to win even the minimum seven seats required, Surat will function without an officially recognized Leader of the Opposition for the first time since 1995.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank the voters, stating that the "bond between Gujarat and the BJP gets even stronger." He credited the sweeping mandate to the party's continued focus on the "politics of good governance."
The saffron wave spared no one. Nainaba Jadeja, sister of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, who contested on a Congress ticket in Rajkot, lost heavily as the entire BJP panel swept her ward.
While the BJP celebrated, the Congress and AAP faced a brutal reality check. However, there was a minor silver lining for Arvind Kejriwal's party. While AAP failed to dent the urban corporations, they did make noticeable inroads in the Saurashtra region's rural pockets. The party successfully captured a few Taluka Panchayats, including Visavdar and Bagasara, further eating into the Congress's traditional rural vote bank.
While the massive seat tally dominates the headlines, the "Missed Angle" here is the psychological victory the BJP secured before a single electronic voting machine was even switched on.
Out of the roughly 9,952 total seats in play across the state, the BJP won 722 seats completely uncontested after mass candidate withdrawals prior to polling day. While the Congress aggressively alleged intimidation and financial inducements, the sheer scale of these walkovers—nearly three times higher than the 2021 civic elections—reveals a stark operational reality.
The BJP's grassroots organizational machinery has entirely demoralized the opposition's cadre. This tactical victory dismantled the opposition's will to even put up a fight in hundreds of smaller municipalities, ensuring the BJP long before counting day.
